Baby Checks - Paediatric Surveillance

Childrens' developmental examinations are carried out mainly by the Health Visitors. The newborn check is carried out by the Health Visitor and 6-8 week checks are done by the doctor. If the Health Visitor is concerned, she will ask the doctor to see the child.

The reasons for doing these checks are-

  • To look for physical abnormalities, especially those that are treatable or correctable.
  • To check feeding and bonding with mother.
  • To check neurological development, ie walking and talking.
  • To encourage vaccination and safety.
  • For us to get to know the young family.

Checks are carried out at-

  • Newborn (HV)
  • 6-8weeks (GP)
  • 7-8 months hearing test (HV)
  • 18-24 months (HV)
  • 3-4 years (pre-school) (HV)
  • Vision check (3-3½ years)
  • School entry check

Mums should make a single booking for their 6 week Post Natal examination and a double booking for the 6 week baby check at the same time.

You will be sent an appointment for all the later checks.

The Health Visitor will provide the parents with a red book containing all the information relating to the child checks and immunisations required to protect their child.  It also provides important information about ongoing checks that the parents can do and lists some of the questions they might be asked about their own health and their baby's health when they attend for the child checks.
