What to do in time of bereavement

If the death occurs at home:

Telephone the doctor, who will visit to confirm that the patient has died.  Contact the funeral director.  He will visit you to discuss the funeral arrangements and give advice on Registration.

The deceased’s GP will normally issue the certificate necessary for registration the following working day or as soon after as possible.

If the death occurs in hospital:

Contact the funeral director.  He will visit you to discuss the funeral arrangements and give you advice on Registration.

The hospital doctor will normally issue the certificate necessary for Registration the following working day.

If the death occurs in a Residential or Nursing Home:

The duty senior carer/nurse will telephone the doctor.  In the case of an expected death, a visit is often not required.
